IBAN is a code used in transactions between different bank accounts. It contains the country identification, the bank and the bank account number. It can be used for both domestic and international transactions. In Italy it is 27 characters long.
The IBAN code is defined at international level and consists of:
2 letters representing the country and 2 control digits the national BBAN code. It is up to the national banks to define the BBAN formulation (digits/letters) of the country they belong to, with the obligation to maintain a fixed length for each individual country (BBANs of the same country must have the same length) and must contain a code to identify the bank in a specific position.
